Interesting WW1 Era Silver Hip Flask, Sniper & Camouflage Expert
This super hallmarked silver and engraved hip flask was the property of Frederick Beni Beddington who had a very interesting first world war and also saw service in the second war, the easiest way to tell you his story Is chronologically so here we go….Frederick Beni Beddington was born in 1896 in South Kensington London and was educated at Wellington leaving school at 18 to join the army, he first served with the 13th Kings Royal Rifle Corps in France as a Lieutenant, Fred was an artist and had acute eyesight and this allowed him to shine as a sharp shooter and sniper with the regiment and to create his own camouflage, during early 1918 he joined the No6 Raf cadet wing and also was a lucky survivor of the flu during that year, after the war he returned to London and studied art at Slade before leaving to make a living in the city as his father before him. When the second war started he re joined and rose up to the rank of Colonel, his previous experience with both art and camouflage led him to become the countries leading expert on camo and he was called on to initiate and organise the whole army camouflage programme throughout the war. Post war he stayed in London and was heavily into the art scene for which he is best known in later life.
The hip flask is hallmarked silver and dates from 1914 and is marked to the base with the makers mark of WN Ltd, to the front it has been engraved with F.B. Beddington 60th Rifles, the body has a series of dents and shows that it has an active life and it comes in its original red Moroccan leather pouch which also has signs of age and wear, a good sized flask measuring 5 inches x 4.
There is extensive paperwork to go with the flask covering Fredericks life and war service, there is also information on one of his brothers who also served in the Great War and was important during WW2 as a director of the Ministry of films.
An interesting and unusual item belonging to an instrumental man.
