A WW2 AM mark 116B/151 bubble sextant,
Manufactured by Henry Hughes & Sons and used on aircraft from 1940 to 1942 and used by the navigator for obtaining the altitude of the sun or other celestial body. It was carried on all multi-manned aircraft including wartime bombers, its typical use was RAF WWII nighttime flyers for star fixes to navigate in the RAF such as Anson’s, Lancaster and Wellington Bombers.
The Hughes factory was bombed during the Blitz between Sept 1940 and May 1941, however this sextant was soon superseded by more advanced instrument made by Samuel Smith and Son.
The Sextants were hung on the inside of the fuselage ready for use, this one comes as it was taken down with the front of the case missing. apart from that, it looks to be complete and comes good used condition, although the electrical wire has become detached but still present.
In the case it measures 9 x 7 inches.
