Rare Russian October 1917 Revolution Cigarette Case.
A very rare, silver-plated cigarette case from the early 1920’s made to commemorate the Russian Revolution’s final phase on the 24/25th October 1917. This case dedicated to the Russian navy, on one side is a scene of the Russian cruiser ship the Abpopa (Aurora) with the date 25 October. The other side is decorated with banners oak leaves and stars with the name ‘ABPOPA’ in a swag at the bottom.
This case is in very good order retaining nearly all its original plating, just a little wear to the high points. It measures 4x3 inches.
During the October Revolution the sailors of the Baltic Fleet or Naval Forces of the Baltic Sea, were among the most ardent supporters of Bolsheviks, and formed an elite among Red military forces. Some ships of the fleet took part in the Russian Civil War, notably by clashing with the British navy operating in the Baltic as part of intervention forces.
In the years that followed the relations of the Baltic Fleet sailors with the Bolshevik regime soured, and they eventually rebelled against the Soviet government in the Kronstadt rebellion in 1921, but were defeated, and the Fleet as it was, ceased to exist as an active military unit.
The ship's commanding officer, Captain Mikhail Nikolsky, was killed when he tried to suppress the revolt.
A rare and interesting case steeped in history.
