Lovely Victorian Framed Oil on Paper Clipper Ship Swallow
This decorative small framed and glazed oil painting is of the American clipper ship White Swallow, it was painted by an artist W. Eaton in 1887, I have been unable to trace this artist as there is a modern 1970’s artist called William Eaton who was a prolific artist and his work is everywhere, the White Swallow had quite a history and some of this is detailed below but I would encourage the new owner to Google the ship and get its full history. The picture has been placed in a modern clip frame and this measures just under 11 inches x 8.5.
Built in Boston in 1853, the White Swallow was active in California trade but also made trips to Hong Kong. In 1886 her crew mutinied in response to abusive treatment by the officers. Six members of her crew were arrested upon their return and were later acquitted in what became an important case for seamen's rights.
