Victorian 1854 India General Service Medal.
1854-95 India General Service Medal correctly named to 1504 Peter. Murray of Her Majesty’s 1st battalion 6th regiment of foot, (Royal Warwickshire).
Before any further description, I must point out that this in an original 1854 IGSM with a wrong replacement suspender, the medal itself has marks where it was made into a brooch and these fittings have been poorly removed.
Private Peter Murray enlisted into the 6th regiment on 25th February 1867 a native of Belfast,
Ireland. He served a total of 13 years with the regiment, mostly in India, he was awarded three good conduct stripes and the IGSM and clasp is confirmed. He was discharged on 6th July 1880 due to ill health. His records state he had regular bouts of Jaundice and phthisis (Tuberculosis) stemming from the inclement climate, which he was treated with Quinine; also he had Syphilis. On his discharge it was stated “He is weak debilitated and unfit for further service. He will not be able to do very much towards helping himself”. The army let Peter go in poor condition, and it is unknown if he survived. There is a man staying with his sister Susan and his brother-in-law Michael on the 1881 Census. This man never married but we find him working as a Dock Labourer in Lancashire 1901. He is living in Bootle as a lodger with three other Irishmen also working on the docks, so this could be a possible as age and place of birth match.
An interesting long service medal, with some damage, but old soldiers did have their medals made into brooches or badges to they served. I think it showed employers they were hard working and responsible.
