Scarce British 1863 Whitworth Sword Bayonet.

The scarce 1863 sword bayonet made for the Whitworth rifle which was adopted on a trial basis by the British Army in 1863. It was issued in small numbers to a small group of infantry regiments. Around 8,206 Whitworth bayonets were recorded manufactured between 1863 and 1866, when the whole set up was discontinued. This is a super example, completely untouched with a heavy patina. The black grips are in good order, and it is marked near the ricasso on one side with the VR crown mark and on the other side with the Enfield proof mark. The scabbard for this bayonet is missing but as the used the blades from the 1853 pattern, scabbards from this type will fit. It measures 27.5 inches long.
