Scarce Original WW1 Great Northern Railway Service Badge

This style of badge was issued between 1914 to 1916 to civilian railway workers proving that the recipient was performing vital national work and was not ‘shirking’ military duty. These badges are heavily reproduced as the originals were supposed to be returned after use thus minimising the availability, the originals have a button back fixing and carry a stamped issue number, this one being 654, it also has the makers mark for J.A. Wylie & Co London. It is constructed from brass with coloured enamels, and comes in very good condition for its age showing signs of age and use. It measures just over one inch in diameter.
