Large WW1 Memorial Frame Named to Williams RWF

A great war period memorial frame made of plaster with a finish to give the impression of bronze. It is in its original oak frame and the cartouche at the bottom has been engraved with the soldiers details.
31406 Private Gwyn Williams of the 16th battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers was born in Brynamman, Carmarthenshire Wales around 1893. Before the war, Gwyn was employed as an engine driver, probably for one of the local coal mines.
He enlisted into the battalion on 8th June 1915 and arrived in France on the 2nd December 1915. The 16th (Service) Battalion, Royal Welch Fusiliers was raised in November 1914 at Llandudno by Col. T.A. Wynne-Edwards. It served as part of the 113th Brigade, 38th (Welsh) Division.
He served with the battalion until 25th March 1916, when he was transferred to the 173rd Tunnelling company, Royal Engineers. 173rd were the first RE tunnelling company to fire a military mine beneath enemy positions at Hill 60 near Ypres and were engaged in intense offensive mining, subterranean warfare, and counter-mining initiatives during the war.
In January 1916, the 173rd Tunnelling Company moved to the Hulluch-Loos area. The unit began sinking shafts and driving galleries to counter an enemy mining initiative immediately to the south and east of Loos. From January 1916 to April 1917, 173rd Tunnelling Company waged war underground on three levels known as Main, Deep and Deep Deep.
Gwyn was Killed in Action on 23rd May 1916 aged just 23 years. He is now remembered with honour at the Noeux-les-Mines Communal cemetery.
Obviously, a lot more research is needed to honour this young man, who was probably killed fighting deep underground.
The memorial frame is in very good condition and contains a picture of Gwyn. There is an old crack running through the body of the frame from lest to right, but this looks quite stable. It also comes with various copied pages of research, including his medal index card, service papers, commonwealth war graves certificate and details from RWF museum which includes another picture. It measures 18 x 22 inches.
