Victorian 1821 Pattern Heavy Cavalry Officers Sword.

A nice example of a mid-period sword with the typical ‘Honeysuckle’ pierced guard, ray skin grip bound with wire and a non-stepped pommel. It has a half-fullered blade, with flat spine dating it post 1869, with etched decoration including Queen Victoria’s cypher and the monogram of the owner has also been etched into the bottom of the blade. It carries the makers mark of Hobson & Son Lexington Street, London, which will also date this sword after 1860. It has the officers issue number on the back of the blade and the Birmingham proof button on one side of the ricasso.
This sword is in very nice condition, I would assume it has been cleaned and tidied up at some point as the hilt is polished. The scabbard has been lacquered black; this is old black lacquer and not just black, brush painted on. Again, this may have been done to improve a rusty scabbard, or some other reason. But a lovely sword in a very collectable grade. Measuring 41.5 inches long.
