(Scottish Rifles). They were formed at Hamilton in August 1914 as part of K1, the first faze of Kitchener’s new armies and came under orders of 28th Brigade in 9th (Scottish) Division. After training they were ordered overseas and landed at Boulogne on 12th May 1915. However, William entered the theatre of war on the 2nd October 1915. In the May of 1916, they were transferred to 27th Brigade in same Division and fought in the battles of the Somme including the battle of Albert and Delville Wood to name just two. In 1917 they took and active part in the Arras Offensive and third battles of Ypres, including the horrors of Passchendaele. 1918 saw the regiment once again involved in heavy fighting at Lys, Final Advance in Flanders and the 9th division was selected to advance to the Rhine as part of the occupation force and crossed into Germany on 4th December 1918, taking up a position in the Cologne bridgehead, one finally being demobbed late February 1919.
It looks like William survived the war and an accurate timeline of his service and life before and after the war needs research.
