Crimea Period 1821 Pattern Cavalry Sword 6th Dragoons.
A superb and scarce Crimean war period 1821 pattern cavalry trooper’s sword. This one of the earlier type, it is not the heavy pattern but more substantial than the later made swords. It has a nice broad 3-bar steel guard, a heavy pronounce pommel and thick quillon, leather grip with riveted lagnets on each side. It has a beautiful steel blade three quarter fullers and thick spear point. The blade has the makers mark of a knight in armour (breastplate and helmet) for the German maker Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Co. German blades are not unusual to find on a sword of the period. And it has another mark on the other side, which I am unsure about, probably a proof marking. It has its original steel scabbard with both rings. The top of the scabbard is stamped 6D over 56. The is for the 6th Dragoons with its rack number.
6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons were part of the Charge of the Heavy Brigade at Balaclava on 25th October 1854 in which a squadron of the 6th with the Scots Greys were in the first line of assault. The heavy brigade just 10 squadrons, under the command of Sir James Scarlett took on the might of the Russian cavalry, numbering over 3,000 to the heavy brigade of 800. The charge was successful in disrupting the Russian cavalry, who were forced to retreat in disorder. The British suffered relatively few casualties compared to the Russian losses.
Although I cannot guarantee, but it is highly likely that this sword was present at the charge. After the Crimean war the cavalry were issued with the 1853 pattern sabre.
This sword comes untouched, so it has a heavy layer of natural patination all over the grip has had a little wood worm, but this has been treated, and the twisted wire is missing. The blade is in just superb order for its age, with no signs of rust or pitting, still nice and bright and unpolished. The scabbard again is untouched and is heavily patinated and has some pitting in areas.
It measures 42 inches long.
