1796 Cavalry Troopers Sword 99 L Dragoons.
A superb untouched example of the 1796 pattern light cavalry trooper’s sword. Produced and used through the Napoleonic wars period. It has the stirrup shape guard with langets, leather covered grip, steel back strap with attached ears on both sides. A heavy long curved blade with three quarter fullers on both sides. It has its original steel scabbard with both hanger rings still present.
One of the langet’s and the top of the scabbard is marked D 99 for the 99th Light Dragoons. This sword was probably passed on to the 99th Light Dragoons after the regular cavalry was finished with it. The scabbard and the back of the blade carries the makers marks for J H Reddell & Co Birmingham, the oval punch mark on the scabbard and punched ‘Joseph Reddell & Co’ on the back of the blade. Marked on the blade near the Ricasso area is a 4 under a crown, this I think is a rack number.
This sword comes in lovely, unmolested condition. The grip has some woodworm holes (Now Treated) and its twisted wire missing. the blade is clean and free from rust with a nice mellow patina, but it does have one very small nick to the blade near the point. The scabbard is free from rust some light pitting but a beautiful dark grey tone, which has a light sheen due to years handling. It measures 39 inches long.
