WW1 British RMS Lusitania 1915 Tribute Medal.
The British version of the German Lusitania medallion, this one is in superb condition in its original box, which is also in exceptional order plus the rare original paperwork detailing the atrocity. The RMS Lusitania was sunk by the German submarine U-20 on 7th May 1915 with 1,951 passengers and crew aboard of which 1,198 were lost including women and children. The original German medal (which there are two versions) designed by Karl Goetz, a Munich-based medallist, celebrated the sinking as a victory. This outraged the British and also the American public, as there were hundreds on board. The British version was struck as anti-German propaganda with proceeds going to the St Dunstan’s Blinded Soldiers and Sailors Hostels and the Red Cross.
