Rare Geo III 1803 Pattern Infantry Officers Sword.
Probably one of the most beautiful of all the British patterns used all through the Napoleonic wars, it has a gilt brass hilt, Lion head pommel, ray skin grip bound with silver wire. An elegant guard with King George III cypher on the knuckle bow. A good curved steel sabre type blade, part blued and engraved filled with gilt. It has the makers mark of Osbourn’s referring to Henry Osbourn of Small Heath Birmingham. His mark is worked into the engraved and gilt decor dating this sword to an early example. It comes in its original black leather scabbard with brass fittings.
Now an original sword dating and probably used during the Napoleonic wars is going to have some faults, this one just has a few very minor ones. Let’s start at the top. The wooden part of the grip has shrunk slightly over the years and there is a small piece of ray skin missing but just look at the patination of the wood showing, its just wonderful. On the hilt, there is some loss to the gilt on the high points, but a lot of the original gilt remains. The blade is stunning showing only light wear, and the bottom part of the blade has just light staining in small areas, but no rust. The scabbard is also in very good order but there is total loss of gilt to the brass parts and the leather has some age-related wear. All in all a superb example of this type of sword. Find another in this condition. It measures 39 inches long.
